Lettuce can be started indoors about 3 weeks before last frost.
Sow lettuce seed outdoors as early as the ground can be worked. Plant in rows 15 inches apart, spacing seeds 1 inch apart in the row. Cover seed with 1/4 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until seeds start to grow.
When lettuce plants are 3 to 4 inches tall, thin to 6 to 8 inches apart.
