Pennyroyal Seeds

Note: Germination instructions are not on seed packets, follow the instructions below for starting seed.

Start inside in trays in early winter, or direct sow in early spring after the danger of frost has passed. Cover seeds lightly in warm soil. Keep soil moist until seeds germinate.

As a hot infusion, this herb is used for colds, fevers and flus as it promotes sweating. Pennyroyal contains a volatile oil which helps to relieve flatulence. It may be used internally or externally (in a footbath) to help bring on suppressed menstrual flow. Pennyroyal has been used to induce abortions but may have very serious consequences. Other uses include: for colic and spasms; toothache; gout; leprosy; consumption; and phlegm in the chest and lungs. Caution: Pennyroyal should not be used by pregnant women or if pregnancy is suspected.
A powerful insect repellant. The crushed leaves are used to repel mosquitoes, gnats, ticks, chiggers and fleas. Mix with lavender and cedar shavings for an insect repelling potpourri to use in closets and drawers. Use to stuff pet bedding.
